Workshops for writers and authors

Look for a workshop in your area.  Libraries are a good place to ask since many workshops meet in libraries.  Check the bulletin board.

Do a search engine lookup for writer workshop using Google or some other search engine.  You should be able to find one that fits your needs. You'll get over 4 million "hits", but only a small number will be for peer writing clubs; most will be for classes in one format or another. Unless you want to plunk down a hunk of cash for what may or may not be a quick boost to your skills, stick with the peer groups. I'm not putting down the others. Some have excellent reputations (such as Clarion), but the peer groups are in it for the long haul.

Here's how most of the peer groups work:

  • You may pay a small membership fee to help defray costs (such as the web site).
  • You'll have to critique other people's submissions to earn "credits" that allow you to submit portions of your own work for critique by others.
  • The quality of the "crits" will depend upon the experience and skill of the other members who chose to critique your work.
  • You'll learn from those "crits" and you'll be surprised how much you learn by giving "crits".

A few examples of on-line groups:
